Bracken is family owned and operated by Jacqueline and David Burt.
David and Jacqueline have lived in New Zealand for 10 years. The first 9 years of living here they lived in Kaikōura. They were there during the earthquakes, where David went to the Marae to cook for the community and tourists for the first few weeks after the event.
David has been a chef since he was 17, where he trained in the Highlands of Scotland under a French Chef. David has since worked across a variety of hotels and restaurants, gaining experience cross a variety of cuisines.
David and Jacqueline have always dreamed of owning their own restaurant, and when the opportunity arose to purchase Bracken, they decided to move their family down to Dunedin the Edinburgh of the South.
They are passionate about their Scottish roots and culture, and this is woven throughout the atmosphere in the restaurant (the staff wear kilts), and the food that is presented to their customers.
Bracken Restaurant offers three weekly menu options at an affordable price, so anyone can experience David's perspective of the Scottish cuisine with locally sourced ingredients in a cozy, welcoming but upscale environment.
''I don't want to scare anyone away. I want to show my passion, my culture, on a plate.
As a chef, I've cooked different styles of food —Italian, European, French—but now I want to get back to my roots.''
